As part of their kitchen remodeling process, Kerry and Jill called on Amsberry Painting for expert cabinet painting in Seattle. Our staff walked the couple through different finish options. After surveying the possibilities and doing a few tests, they decided to go with lacquer shading to update their cabinets’ outdated look.
To complete the work to our high standard, we used a multi-step approach. Key stages in this process included extensive prep, lacquer application, and a final cleanup. When we were done, Kerry and Jill had the transformed kitchen of their dreams!
Prepping For Cabinet Refinishing in Seattle, WA
After working with Kerry and Jill’s schedule, we chose a date, and the project began. Our Project Manager, Roland Stout, said, “This type of project requires a lot of prep. About 80% of the job was prep work.”
The job did require extensive groundwork. First, all the cabinet door and drawer fronts were removed and lightly sanded in order to give the lacquer something to bind to.
Next, all the open cabinetry in the kitchen was masked off to protect spaces that would not receive the lacquer. Plastic was hung from the ceiling to create an enclosed space and avoid overspraying in the kitchen and other areas of the house. The open cabinets in the kitchen were sanded lightly, just like the doors and drawers had been.
Applying Lacquer To The Kitchen Cabinets And Island
Next, it was time to apply the lacquer. We began this stage by sectioning off Kerry and Jill’s Seattle garage with plastic to create a spray booth (an enclosed area where lacquer could be sprayed).
Inside this booth, the drawers and doors were sprayed with a coat of lacquer and hung up to dry. A second coat was sprayed after the drying of the first coat was complete.
We also formed a second spray booth around the kitchen. There, we sprayed the first coat of lacquer on the open cabinets. Four hours later, the second coat was sprayed.
The kitchen island received four coats of lacquer per Kerry and Jill’s preference. They chose this approach because they wanted their kitchen island to be a darker color than their cabinetry.
Clean-Up In Kerry And Jill’s Greater Seattle Home
After 24 hours of drying time, we were ready to clean up. All the masking was removed, the floors were swept, and everything was put back in its place.
Kerry said, “The painters went into my shop and took extra time to make sure it was ready for me to use again.” All the unmasking and clean-up revealed the finished project: a brand-new kitchen!
